PE and School Sport Funding

The government is determined to secure a significant and lasting legacy from the very successful 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games that were held in London.

In order to achieve this and improve the provision of PE and sport in primary schools, additional funding of £150 million per annum has been made available since 2014.

In our school this amounts to £16,000

At Ernest Cookson School we believe that sport plays an important part as it contributes to the health and well-being of our children. Sporting excellence and participation, alongside strong cultural opportunities, go hand in hand with academic standards.

We have used the Sport Funding to purchase the gold membership of the Liverpool Schools Sports Partnership (£7,523), which alongside our own school actions has enabled us to strengthen and improve our provision in the following ways:

  • To hire  a specialist PE teacher/qualified sports coach to work alongside our teachers when teaching PE
  • To pay for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport
  • To provide cover to release teachers for professional development in PE and sport
  • To attend sport competitions and increase pupils’ participation in school Games
  • To buy quality assured professional development modules /materials for PE and sport

PE Curriculum

A wide range of activities are delivered in school which aim to engage and inspire all children. We are also committed to ensure that all children receive at least 2 hours per week of high quality well-planned PE.

Over the year each child will participate in games, athletics and gymnastics lessons.

Opportunities are also planned for swimming in Years 4/5/6 (£6,500).  Our aim is that all children leave our school at the end of Year 6 able to swim 25 metres.

All pupils receive Outdoor and Adventurous Education via Forestry School and Educational visits to North Wales for example.

The Wider Curriculum

PE and sport has a high profile in our school and permeates many aspects of school life.

We offer extra opportunities for sporting activities such as ten pin bowling and watersports as rewards for attendance and behaviour incentives.

During our Educational visits, children are given opportunity to participate in many different activities which may include orienteering, assault courses, hill walking, climbing etc

In the summer term we also hold our annual Sports Day in which we encourage participation of all children and organise competitive races for our more sporting youngsters.

Other agencies are used to enhance the variety of activities available and we take full advantage when these opportunities become available. For example Everton and Liverpool football clubs run training sessions in school.

Talented children are signposted to local clubs and events to encourage them to develop their skills.

School also believes it is important for the children to meet local sporting role models. Visitors have included a SkySport Learning

Mentors

Children enjoy the opportunity to work with different teachers and have the chance to try many sports such as Lacrosse, Tennis, Football, Multi-skills, Hockey, Cricket, Rounders, Athletics and Cross Country.

Beyond the School Day

The school is keen to provide a wide range of extra-curricular clubs for children throughout the year which are organised by our teaching staff and/or sports coaches.

We try to cater for all our children’s needs and so ask the children which clubs they would like to see included during the year

We enter a wide range of competitions and have had many successes including New Age Kurling, Basketball and football.

School experiences are pivotal to the children’s future perception of physical activity and we believe that children leave our school equipped to enjoy sport for all its health and social benefits. For those who relish the competitive element, they gain the skills, confidence and relevant experience to succeed at their chosen level and discipline.
